 Biography

Dr. Christian Nansen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at UC Davis. He has studied insect ecology and management in agricultural systems in Europe, Australia, Brazil, Africa, and the US. A key research priority in his career has been to develop remote sensing technologies to improve sampling and detection of crop stress by insects and other pests (Nansen, 2016; Nansen & Elliot, 2016). He is also studying different applications of proximal remote sensing as part of food safe and quality control. He has also recently developed a freely available phone app, SnapCard (http://agspsrap31.agric.wa.gov.au/snapcard/), to optimize pesticide spray applications (Nansen et al., 2015).

 Research Interest

He is particularly interested in research development of reflectance-based detection of crop stress so that: 1) crop monitoring can be automated, and 2) early stress levels can be detected and mitigated through responsive actions (such as, through as fertilizer and irrigation, or through targeted pesticide applications). As part of detecting subtle/emerging stress symptoms in crops, it is paramount to develop robust and reliable signal processing and correction procedures and classification methods – all these aspects are being studied in detail in the Nansen lab.(see website: http://chrnansen.wix.com/nansen2).
